Abstract
It has been suggested that hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection could be a model for other diseases transmitted via the fecal-oral route. In this study, we aimed to determine the positivity ratio and risk factors for hepatitis E virus (HEV) in anti-HAV positive patients. Anti-HEV positivity by ELİSA was investigated in 91 anti-HAV positive and 58 anti-HAV negative patients attending our outpatient clinic between September1996-February 1998. Two out of 91 anti-HAV positive patients (2.19) were found to have anti-HEV positivity while no HEV positivity was found in the HAV negative group. As no HEV positivity was found in the control group, the estimated relative risk could not be calculated between the two groups. The 2.19% ratio was found to be similar to ratios found in metropolitan cities such as Istanbul and Trabzon. Poor sanitation and low educational and socioeconomic status are thought to be risk factors for HEV infection. As both of our groups consisted of patients with a higher educational and socioeconomical status, the above mentioned risk factors were not detected. In order to illuminate the epidemiology of HEV in our country , more studies need to be conducted in this field in the future. However, HEV is not considered to be as important as HAV in our society.
Özet
Geçirilmiş hepatitis A virus (HAV) infeksiyonunun fekal-oral geçiş gösteren diğer infeksiyonlar için gösterge olabileceği düşünülmektedir.
