COMPATIBILITY OF NEW ADDITIONS DESIGN ATTACHED TO HISTORIC BUILDINGS: ELBPHILHARMONIE CULTURE CENTER

Abstract

New additions to historical buildings demonstrate that historical continuity proceeds, by creating an interface between the past and the future. The progression of historical continuity provides the relationship between different periods. New additions that provide historical continuity are important both in terms of the connection they establish with their surroundings and in terms of the continuation of the functionality of historical buildings. However, how the new addition design should relate to the historical building is a frequently asked research question in the field of architecture. With this study, it is aimed to clarify an important research topic in the field of architecture by evaluating the compatibility of historical buildings and new additions with each other through the newly developed tangible method. An original analysis method has been developed to measure concretely the degree of compatibility of the new addition within the scope of new addition design for historical buildings. This method consists of three phases. The first phase is Architectural Character Analysis; the context of the existing building has been examined and supported with visuals. The second phase is Conceptual Analysis; forty different criteria (design and value concepts) have been determined by literature research and their being the same or different have been examined. In the third phase, the numerical data in the conceptual analysis have been marked on the color chart. By using this unique method, the compatibility test between the historical building and additional building has been conducted and the relationship between them has been numerically revealed. Within the scope of this study, the notion of new addition is considered as additional structures used and interacting with the existing building. To test the development of additional building design according to architectural design; It has a scope based on architectural design criteria, principles and concepts. Within the scope of the study, the example of the Elbphilharmonie Cultural Center has been examined and analyzed with the method created. As a result of the analysis, the degree of compatibility between the historical building and the new addition has been determined. Thus, the evaluations at the qualitative level have been transferred to the quantitative level with the graphics created and contributed to the easier reading of the structure.

Tarihi yapılara getirilen yeni ekler, geçmiş ve gelecek arasında bir ara yüz oluşturarak tarihsel sürekliliğin devam ettiğini göstermektedir. Tarihsel sürekliliğin devamı, farklı dönemlerin birbirleri ile ilişkisini kurmaktadır. Tarihsel sürekliliği sağlayan yeni ekler hem çevresiyle kurduğu bağlantı hem de tarihi yapıların kullanılabilirliği açısından önemlidir. Ancak tarihi yapı ve yeni ek arasında nasıl bir ilişki kurulması gerektiği mimarlık alanında çokça sorgulanan bir araştırma sorusudur. Bu çalışma ile, tarihi yapılar ve yeni eklerin birbiri ile uyumunu, yeni geliştirilen sayısal yöntem aracılığıyla değerlendirerek mimarlık alanında önemli bir araştırma konusuna açıklık getirmek amaçlanmıştır. Tarihi yapılara yeni ek tasarımı kapsamında yeni ek’ in uyumluluk derecesini somut olarak ölçmek için özgün bir analiz metodu geliştirilmiştir. Bu yöntem üç evreden meydana gelmektedir. İlk evre Mimari Karakter Analizidir; mevcut yapının bağlamı irdelenmiş ve görsellerle desteklenmiştir. İkinci evre Kavramsal Analizdir; literatür araştırmalarıyla belirlenen kırk farklı kriter (tasarım ve değer kavramları) belirlenmiş ve bunların aynı ya da farklı olma durumu incelenmiştir. Üçüncü evrede ise kavramsal analizde bulunan sayısal done, renk grafiğine işaretlenmiştir. Bu özgün metot aracılığıyla tarihi yapı ile ek yapıların uyum testi yapılmış, aralarındaki ilişki sayısal olarak ortaya konmuştur. Bu çalışma kapsamında yeni ek kavramı, mevcut binayla birlikte kullanılan ve etkileşimde olan ek yapılar olarak ele alınmıştır. Bu yeni ek yapıların, mimari tasarıma göre şekillenmesini test etmek amacıyla; mimari tasarım ölçütlerine, ilkelerine, kavramlarına dayanan bir kapsama sahiptir. Çalışma kapsamında Elbphilharmonie Kültür Merkezi örneği incelenmiş ve oluşturulan metot ile analiz edilmiştir. Yapılan analiz sonucunda tarihi yapı-yeni ek yapı arasındaki uyumluluğun hangi derecede olduğu belirlenmiştir. Böylece nitel düzeyde olan değerlendirmeler oluşturulan grafikler ile nicel düzeye aktarılmış, yapının daha kolay okunabilmesine katkı sağlanmıştır.
