The Phenomenon of Tourism Shaped Around Modernity and Postmodernity and Its Development

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the development and transformation of tourism within the concepts of modernity and postmodernity, and to make a conceptual contribution to the relevant knowledge accumulation with a holistic approach by considering the consequences of possible developments and transformations in economic, socio-cultural, ecological and political structures within the context of “periphery- center” interactions of tourism related activities. With respect to this, this study makes a conceptual evolution based on the relevant literature, in the light of which, it is understood that tourism is affected and shaped significantly by various historical transformations. Hence, it can be concluded that while the modern era prepared the ground for mass tourism, the postmodern period has prepared the ground for alternative tourism types; and that the reflections of these transformational processes on tourism have resulted in both positive and negative consequences.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, modernite ve postmodernite olguları kapsamındaturizmin gelişim ve değişimini inceleyerek; iktisadi, sosyo-kültürel,ekolojik ve politik yapılardaki olası gelişim ve değişimlerin sonuçlarınınturizm faaliyetleri ile etkileşimini “çevre-merkez” ilişkisinikavramsal olarak ele alarak ilgili bilgi birikimine bütünsel bir bakış ilekatkı oluşturabilmektir. Bu bağlamda, bu çalışmada, ikincil kaynaklaradayalı olarak kavramsal bir değerlendirme yapılmaktadır. İncelenenkaynaklar ışığında turizmin, farklı tarihsel süreçlerdeki değişimlerdenönemli derecede etkilenmesi ve şekillenmesinin söz konusu olduğuanlaşılmaktadır. Bu kapsamda modern dönemin kitle turizmine, postmoderndönemin ise alternatif turizm türlerine zemin hazırladığı ve busüreçlerin turizme yansımasının hem olumlu hem de olumsuz olarakadlandırılabilecek durumlara sebep olduğu bu çalışmada değerlendirilmektedir.
