Abstract

Social interactions occur as a natural result of coexistence, and in this communicative process, languages of the societies may differ by influencing each other at certain rates. Language contact and consequent changes demonstrate that this process takes place in a certain order, according to the data obtained from language contact areas. In other words, some grammatical domains consist with different words, morphemes and patterns are affected more, while others are limited to the change. In this study, around three thousand interaction elements with different usage frequencies evaluated as code mixing and switching units, in the verbal narratives of twenty-five Kurmanji Kurdish-Turkish bilinguals, in terms of determining the source language and its transmission rates. It is understood that some grammatical domains are more open to change, while others exhibit limiting views due to functional Kurmanji bound morphemes. Therefore mixed utterance domains are more common in bilingual Kurmanji utterances. Although it is very limited, depending on the continuing recessive bilingualism, free and bound functional units and words belonging to the core lexicon and, consequently, semantico-syntactic meaning patterns, can be settled from the dominant language to the domains of receptive language.
