Silence as a Political Behavior in Academic Organizations: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reveal the causes and meanings of silence in formal group settings of academic organizations. To this end, a deep and comprehensive investigation was performed using the phenomenological approach, which is a qualitative method, with 36 academic staff who had experienced silence within the relevant formal structure. The findings revealed that silence in the context produced by structural and cultural characteristics of formal group settings of academic organizations was caused by psychological, socio-cultural, individual, situational, and managerial factors, and factors attributed to the organizational context, besides the system. On the other hand, the synthesis of textural and structural descriptions showed that silence reflects a form of political behavior in formal group settings of academic organizations. The study identified different definitions and insights related to the phenomenon of silence in organizational life.
Özet
Bu çal›flma, akademik örgütlerde biçimsel gruplardaki sessizlik davran›fl›n›n nedenlerinin ve anlamlar›n›n a盤a ç›kar›lmas›n› amaçlamaktad›r. Bu do¤rultuda nitel araflt›rma yöntemlerinden fenomenoloji yaklafl›m› benimsenerek, Türkiye’de ilgili biçimsel yap› içerisinde sessizli¤i tecrübe etmifl 36 ö¤retim üyesinin kat›l›m›yla derin ve genifl kapsaml› bir inceleme gerçeklefltirilmifltir. Elde edilen bulgular akademik örgütlerde biçimsel gruplar›n yap›sal ve kültürel özelliklerinin üretti¤i ba¤lamdaki sessizli¤in psikolojik, sosyokültürel, bireysel, durumsal, yönetsel, örgütsel ba¤lama ve sisteme iliflkin faktörlere ba¤l› olarak geliflti¤ini ortaya koymufltur. Fenomenolojik veri analizinin son ad›m› olan dokusal ve yap›sal betimlemelerin birlefltirilmesi sonucunda oluflan ortak anlam da akademik örgütlerde biçimsel gruplardaki sessizli¤in politik bir davran›fl biçimini yans›tt›¤›n› göstermifltir. Çal›flma, akademik örgütlerdeki biçimsel grup yap›lar› ba¤lam›na özgü tespitleriyle örgütsel yaflamdaki sessizlik fenomenine yönelik farkl› tan›mlamalar ve anlay›fllar gelifltirmifltir.
