Abstract

Victor Turner's ritual research has been influential in the 20th century, in terms of structuring basic concepts in performance theory and research. Turner's work also enables an experienceoriented reading in performance theories and ritual analysis, by creating an alternative to Eurocentric performance readings. In this study, the musical practices in cem ritual performances of the Alevi tradition of Anatolia, focusing on the place of the musician in the ritual and the symbolic use of the instrument (the saz) will be examined through the concepts of “liminality” and “communitas” which are among the most important concepts in ritual theory.
