Energy from the Dynamics of Growth: An Empirical Study on the Turkish Economy

Büyümenin Dinamiklerinden Enerji: Türkiye Ekonomisi Üzerine Ampirik Bir Çalışma

Abstract

Energy consumption, which has a very large place in terms of world economies, also has a significant impact on economic growth. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of energy consumption on economic growth in terms of the Turkish economy through annual data for the period 1990-2019. The unit root test of the variables in the study was examined with the ADF unit root test. Whether there is a cointegration relationship between the variables was analyzed with the Johansen cointegration test. In addition, FMOLS, DOLS and CCR methods, which are long-term coefficient estimators, were used. According to the coefficient estimators of the variables that have a cointegration relationship between them, the increase in energy consumption increases economic growth by approximately 0.90%. Therefore, as a result of an increase in energy consumption for any reason, economic growth will be positively affected.

Özet

Dünya ekonomileri açısından çok büyük bir yere sahip olan enerji tüketimi, ekonomik büyüme üzerinde de önemli etki yaratmaktadır. Bu çalışmadaki amaç Türkiye ekonomisi açısından enerji tüketiminin ekonomik büyüme üzerindeki etkisini 1990-2019 dönemine ait yıllık veriler aracılığıyla ele almaktır. Çalışmadaki değişkenlerin birim kök sınaması ADF birim kök testiyle incelenmiştir. Değişkenler arasında eşbütünleşme ilişkisinin olup olmadığı Johansen eşbütünleşme testiyle analiz edilmiştir. Ayrıca uzun dönem katsayı tahmincilerinden olan FMOLS, DOLS ve CCR yöntemlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Aralarında eşbütünleşme ilişkisi bulunan değişkenlerin katsayı tahmincilerine göre enerji tüketimindeki artış ekonomik büyümeyi yaklaşık olarak %0.90 artırmaktadır. Dolayısıyla enerji tüketiminin herhangi bir nedenle artmasının sonucunda ekonomik büyüme pozitif yönde etkilenecektir.
