Namik Kemal’s East-West Synthesis and Evolution into Romanticism

Abstract
This paper discusses the obligatory contact of Ottoman Empire, which could only delay its inevitable collapse beginning even before the nineteenth century, with European civilization, which strengthened and rose even more under the influence of Enlightenment ideas, in the political and social field within the scope of the Gulhane Rescript of 1839 and its impacts, which became effective due to its content It also analyzes Namık Kemal’s East-West synthesis and the evolution into Romanticism that began in France and rapidly influenced many artists in both Europe and Turkey. Namık Kemal, an Ottoman intellectual, was one of the most important personages of his time and in Ottoman and Turkish literature’s modernization in parallel with the West. His synthesis proposed adopting the techniques of the West rather than simply copying them.

Bu makalede, on dokuzuncu asırdan evvel başlayan çöküş sürecini ertelemekten başka bir neticeye ulaşamayan Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun, zorunlu olarak Aydınlanma fikirlerinin tesirleri altında daha da güçlenen ve yükselen Avrupa medeniyeti ile siyasi ve sosyal sahada temasa geçmesi, muhtevası ile etkin olan Tanzimat Fermanı ve tesirleri çerçevesinde işlenmiştir. Osmanlının Batılı manada modernleşmesi bağlamında, Türk Edebiyatının ve dönemin önemli şahsiyetlerinden biri olan ve sentez önerisinde bulunan, bu önerisinde Batı’yı olduğu gibi taklit etmekten ziyade daha çok Batı’nın tekniğini almaktan yana görüş beyan eden Osmanlı aydını Namık Kemal’in Doğu-Batı sentezinde, Fransa’da gelişip tüm Avrupa’da ve Türk edebiyatında kısa sürede pek çok sanatçıyı etkisi altına alan Romantizme eviriliş süreci incelenmiştir.
