Abstract
Since both food retail industry employees and customers do not pay attention to the expiry date (EXP date), also known as the expiration date, serious grievances are experienced, especially on the customer side. To eliminate these grievances and the negative perceptions that may arise against the seller-manufacturer brand, retail managers need to implement several strategies to solve the problems related to the expiry date. The expiry date is a critical issue that needs to be examined first in terms of human health and then legal, ethical, and customer satisfaction. For this purpose, 86 customer complaints from the Karabük Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and 481 customer complaints from sikayetvar.com were analyzed using the content analysis method. The findings showed that the main reason for consumer’ complaints was that they did not read the expiry date when purchasing products. This situation does not remove the retailer's responsibility for selling defective goods whose expiry date has passed. According to the analyzed data set, the products with the highest number of expiry date complaints were eggs, milk, dairy products, and meat and meat products (74.2%). It was generally understood at home (93.5%) that the product's expiry date had passed due to its lousy color, odor, and taste. Even if the EXP date of the product had not passed due to the retailer, it may be damaged due to improper storage conditions (59%). The customers, who realized that they had bought a product whose expiry date had passed, first complained to the seller. (79.7%). Only 45.5% of the customers, who applied to the retailer to return the product whose expiry date had passed, found a solution to their problem immediately. Customers who had a complaint about a product whose expiry date had passed abondoned the retailer brand (19.2%). In addition, they adopted a negative attitude towards the retailer brand (13.4%).
