Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between balance and trunk control in children with hemiplegic and diplegic cerebral palsy (CP).Methods: This study is planned to investigate the effect of balance and trunk control on upper extremity functions in children with CP. 30 hemiplegic and 32 diplegic CP, in total 62 children, aged between 5-12 years, were included in this study. The mean age of the hemiplegic children participating in the study was 8.45±2.32 years, and that of the diplegic children was 9.03±2.37 years. Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS) was used to assess trunk control, and Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS) was used to evaluate balance. Results: According to the results of the study, hemiplegic children were statistically higher than the diplegic children regarding all subscales and total scores of TCMS (p<0.05). The PBS score of the hemiplegic children was statistically higher than the diplegics (p<0.05). In children with hemiplegic CP, the good positive correlation between the total score of TCMS and PBS score was well correlated (r=0.661, p<0.05). In depressed children, there was a positive excellent correlation between TCMS score and PBS score (r=0.707, p<0.05). Conclusion: These results show that there is a significant positive correlation between trunk control and balance in children with hemiplegic and diplegic CP. It was thought that the relationship between trunk control and balance should be considered during physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices and evaluations.
