WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF GENDER THE REFLECTIONS ON EDUCATION AND WOMEN'S EMPLOYMENT IN TURKEY

TOPLUMSAL CİNSİYET BAĞLAMINDA TÜRKİYE’DE EĞİTİM VE KADIN İSTİHDAMINA YANSIMALARI

Abstract

The concept of gender, which means socially formed roles and learned behaviors for men and women, is effective in all areas of life for both genders. Although these concept is not female-specific, in most societies these roles comprise of implementations against women and turn women into objects of power (men). Nevertheless, in order for women to gain social status, it is significant to increase their employability by increasing their education level. However, it is observed that women in Turkey do not have equal2 rights when compared to men at every stage of education and in business life after education period. In this article, in regard to the concept of gender. it is aimed to evaluate the circumstance of women in terms of education and employment in Turkey. As a result of the study, it has been seen that the educational levels of women in Turkey differ in the regions, rural and urban areas, women are employed at lower rates even if women and men have the same educational level and they cannot receive equal wages for equal work. Even though raising the level of education is an effective way to increase the employability of women, gender inequality has become an obstacle in the issue of equal opportunities in education.

Özet

Kadın ve erkek bireyler için toplum tarafından oluşturulmuş roller ve öğrenilmiş davranışlar anlamına gelen toplumsal cinsiyet kavramı, her iki cinsiyet için de yaşamın her alanında etkilidir. Bu kavram sadece kadınlara özgü olmasa da, çoğu toplumda kadınlar aleyhine uygulamalardan oluşarak kadınları iktidarın (erkeğin) nesnesi haline dönüştürmektedir. Bununla birlikte, kadınların toplumsal statü kazanabilmeleri için eğitim düzeylerinin yükseltilerek istihdam edilebilirliklerinin artırılması önem arz etmektedir. Ancak Türkiye’de kadınların eğitimin her aşamasında ve eğitim sonrası çalışma hayatında erkeklerle eşit haklara sahip olmadığı görülür. İşte bu makalede toplumsal cinsiyet kavramından hareketle Türkiye’de kadınların eğitim ve istihdamdaki durumu hakkında değerlendirme yapılması amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda Türkiye’de kadınların eğitim seviyelerinin bölgelerde, kırsal ve kentsel alanlarda farklı olduğu, aynı eğitim seviyesinde olan kadın ve erkeklerden, kadınların daha düşük oranlarda istihdam edildiği ve eşit işe eşit ücret alamadıkları görülmüştür. Kadınların istihdam edilebilirliğini artırmak için eğitim seviyesinin yükseltilmesi etkili bir yol olsa da toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliği eğitimde fırsat eşitliğinin önünde bir engel oluşturmuştur.
