Abstract

Aim: It is known that some members of Ottoman Dynasty have diverse diseases. The purpose of this study is to appraise the eye diseases of the sultans. Materials and Methods: We have examined the sultans’ portraits in the Topkapı Palace Museum Painting Hall and Palace Warehouse. We have analyzed the oil painting, watercolor, miniature, engravings, photographs and other portraits of rulers from the first Ottoman ruler Osman Gazi to the last ruler Vahideddin and last Caliph Abdülmecid in the above-mentioned places. Furthermore, we have collected information concerning the eyes and/or eye diseases of the sultans in several written sources on the history of the Ottoman and sultan biographies. Findings: We have identified that some members of the dynasty had strabismus, ptosis and refractive disorders. Interpretation: In line with the documents and information, we understood that the first samples of the portrait art in Ottoman were produced in the last quarter of the 15th century. We observe some eye diseases in the Ottoman dynasty from the small yet significant details in the written sources on the Ottoman history, as well as extremely diligent and detailed drawings of foreign and domestic painters. Undoubtedly, we should not ignore the fact that the flaws of a person in the sultan's position are not clarified but depicted by the painter. However, we believe that although some physiological features are shown only in certain sultans, they are not seen in all sultans, and that painters demonstrate the closest pictures to reality. We think that the sultans who have exotropia (outward-crossing) and semi-closed eyelids drawings have really exotropia and eyelid ptosis.
