The Importance of the Concept of Pater in Cato the Elder’s Political Career

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the importance of the concept of pater in the political career of the famous Roman politician Marcus Porcius Cato, known as Cato the Elder. The concept of pater is one of the fundamental values of Rome as a patriarchal society. Cato, who was defined as a conservative politician, was aware of the importance of this concept in Rome, especially in the family, as well as in the military and political sphere. He succeeded in showing himself as an ideal pater and used this in his political career. Just by looking at the importance he gave to his son's education and the works he wrote, it is possible to say that Cato, just like a pater, was acting as the protector of Rome's cultural values. It will be enlightening to proceed through Cato, an important historical figure, in order to question the place of the pater concept in Roman culture and history, and to see how this status was used in the political field. Although Cato embraced the values of Rome as an ideal pater and thus the savior of society, he had to settle for the title of “Wise” instead of the pater patriae. As a result, it is seen that Cato’s political attitude was adopted by many politicians who came after him, especially Augustus.

Bu çalışmada, Bilge Cato olarak bilinen ünlü Romalı politikacı Marcus PorciusCato’nun siyasi kariyerinde, pater kavramının önemi irdelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Paterkavramı, patriarkal bir toplum olan Roma’nın temel değerlerinden biridir. Muhafazakâr birpolitikacı olarak tanımlanan Cato, bu kavramın Roma’da başta aile olmak üzere askerî vesiyasi alanda da öneminin farkında olan bir siyasetçi olarak kendisini ideal bir pater olarakgöstermeyi başarmış ve bunu siyasi kariyerinde kullanmıştır. Sadece oğlunun eğitimineverdiği önem ve yazdığı eserlere bakılarak dahi Cato’nun tıpkı bir pater gibi Roma’nınkültürel değerlerinin koruyucusu rolüne soyunduğunu söylemek mümkündür. Paterkavramının Roma kültürü ve tarihi içerisindeki yerini sorgulamak ve politik alanda bustatünün nasıl kullanılmış olduğunu görmek açısından, önemli bir tarihî aktör olan Catoüzerinden yol almak aydınlatıcı olacaktır. Cato her ne kadar ideal bir pater olarak Roma’nındeğerleri ve dolayısıyla toplumun kurtarıcısı rolünü benimsemiş olsa da pater patriae yerine‘Bilge’ unvanı ile yetinmek durumunda kalmıştır. Sonuç olarak Cato’nun bu politik tavrının,kendinden sonra gelen başta Augustus olmak üzere pek çok siyaset adamı tarafından dabenimsenmiş olduğu görülür.
