Abstract

Introduction: Problematic internet use has become a public health as use of the internet has rapidly spread across all over the World. Researchs have been suggested that problematic internet use have negative effects on health and academic performance. Problematic internet use can also disrupt the sleep-wake schedule. The aim of this study was to determine the affect of internet addiction on the sleep quality on medical students. Method: The study has included 477 medical students attending the 1,2, and 3. class at Dokuz Eylul University, School of Medicine. Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Online Cognition Scale (OCS) and a questionnaire asking sociodemographic features of students were applied by the researchers. P <0,05 were accepted as statistically significant. Results: Of the participants, 44,9% were female and 55,1 were male and the mean age was 19,9 ±1,4 years. After assessing the Pittsburg sleep quality index, 62,5% of the students had sleep disorders. The mean score of the online cognition scale (84,6±38,4) of the students with sleep disorders was higher than the score (74,4±31,5 of the students with no sleep disorders (p=0,002). Conclusion: Internet addiction affects the sleep quality and causes sleep disorders among students. As the internet addiction is a rapidly growing problem for young people, it has been needed more studies about affects of internet addiction on health.
