Abstract
The objective et ve of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value of Stereologic estimation of mean nuclear volume in patients with invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. Sixty-nine patients were included in our study group. Stereologic method of point-sampled intercepts was performed to estimate mean nuclear volume by using an orientation frame and a test system in routinely processed tissue sections. in statistical analysis mean nuclear volume was significantly higher in tumors with larger tumour size, lymph node involvement and advanced stage. The prognosis of patients with high mean nuclear volume was found to be worse than cases with low mean nuclear volume. Multivariate analysis revealed that mean nuclear volume was an independent prognostic factor. Results of our study indicate that estimation of mean nuclear volume could be an easy, fast, and objective method to predict the survival in patients with invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast and might be used as a supplement to conventional prognostic parameters.
