Abstract

In this essay, the polytheist origins of the monotheist religion is explored. By doing this it is argued that religion began with the passage to the classed-society. In the Sumerian cities, every city had a protector god or goddess. In a city-state, city land is considered as “god’s field”, temple as “god’s home”, ruler as “god’s caretaker”. Sumerian creation myth tablets say that human beings are created as slaves to the gods and goddesses (this is a belief that continued until the emergence of monotheism). The belief that human beings are created from mud as slaves (in Turkish “kul”) for the gods and goddesses were transferred to the Old Testament by the exiled Babilonia Jews and then it was passed to the Koran. The unequal relationship between the creator and the created (in Turkish Allah ile kul) is in fact a religious ideology that was formed as a refl ection of the real relations between master and slave and ruler and subject. It provides an example for the unequal relations within the society and reproduces them by proving that these relations are the result of the holy order. This belief was transformed to polytheism with a king god in the local states (containing several city states) and to monotheism in the empires.
