Abstract

Women still face unequal treatment and are considered to be secondary in the family, in public institutions, in populist ideologies, and in national and international politics all around the world. Women in the Middle East, where cultural and religious traditions reign, feel all these in inequalities all the more intensely. Women in this region are at a disadvantage compared to the women living in the western countries in entertaining reproductive rights and liberties and in accessing reproductive health services. "Induced abortion" or "legal abortion", which is considered to be an important reproductive health problem", is subject to different regulations all over the world, ranging from a complete ban to complete freedom. In a group of countries, which comprises 61% of the total world population, there are no legal obstacles to abortion with the aim of protecting the physical and mental health as well as the socioeconomic status of mothers, while in a total of 72 countries, which comprise 26% of the total world population, abortion is prohibited. In these countries, abortion is allowed only in cases when the mother's life is at stake. Like in many other Muslim countries, in the Middle Eastern countries, too, abortion is considered a crime unless it is based on justifiable grounds. Among these countries are Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, and Iran. This article discusses the reproductive health problems and especially the question of induced abortion along with its effects on women's health in the Middle Eastern countries. Additionally, "the question of abortion" is examined in the context of Iran, which differs from other countries by its social and religious policies and cultural identity, within the framework of women's rights and women's rights movements.
