Abstract
As a result of a process of change that started in Turkey in the 80s, hospitals are now defined as ef icient health enterprises . In the past, health facilities including state hospitals, hospitals run by the SSK (Social Security Agency), health centres and sanatoriums were all publicly owned and operated. Today, the private sector is openly and directly encouraged in the health sector and public hospitals are being commercialized under the model known as public-private partnership . In this special issue, the journal Society and Medicine follows the course of transformation in hospitals starting from the 80s, examines the driving forces of this transformation and gives an account of the present situation.
