Abstract

This study examines the manifestations of anti-gender movements in academia by focusing on the 30 years of historical development and the transformation of women and gender studies in Turkey. The increasing political dominance of anti-gender movements throughout the world, especially over the past decade, has brought a new impetus to the widespread attacks on the historical gains, rights and freedoms of women and LGBTI+. Women’s and gender studies as an academic discipline are also among the main targets of this attack. Anti-genderism, which is the basis of authoritarian regimes combines a wide political spectrum ranging from conservative, far-right, nationalist parties to all religions in the argument that heteronormative gender identities are natural and inevitable. Anti-genderism, therefore, represents a re-aff irmation of the binary gender hierarchy with religious, racist, homophobic references, rather than simply being hostility to feminism. This counter-attack imposing a norm of what science is ‘really’ also means the denial of academic freedom and the complete removal of universities from being a place where given reality is unconditionally questioned and criticized.
