A study of the academic literature on social democracy

Abstract

Social democracy was born as a reaction to the social problems created by the capitalist modernization in the nineteenth century. It had a central role in the making of the modern European societies. During the twentieth century, it had immense organizational successes and election victories, and it transformed the societies. In the 1980s, orientation through social democracy increased in global peripheral countries. Social democratic movement and thinking is not a well-known subject in Turkey. The main aim of this article is to analyze the academic literature on social democracy. Within the context of this analysis, the academic literature on historiography of social democracy, economic and social views of social democracy, social democracy under the neoliberal globalization circumstances and social de- mocracy in the global periphery will be scrutinized.

Sosyal demokrasi Batı Avrupada, 19. yüzyılda kapitalist modernleşmenin ortaya çıkardığı toplumsal sorunlara bir tepki olarak doğmuştur. Modern Avrupa toplumunun oluşumunda çok önemli bir rol oynayan sosyal demokrat hareketler, 20. yüz- yıl boyunca büyük örgütsel başarılar ve seçim başarıları elde ederek içinde bulundukları toplumları dönüştürmüştür. Küresel çevre ülkelerinde sosyal demokrasiye yönelim ise 1980li yıllardan sonra artmıştır. Sosyal demokrasi hareketi ve düşüncesi Türkiyede yeteri kadar tanınmamaktadır. Bu yazının amacı sosyal demokrasi üzerine akademik literatürü analiz etmektir. Bu analiz kapsamında sosyal demokrasinin historiyografisi, sosyal demokrasinin ekonomi ve toplum görüşü, neoliberal küreselleşme ortamında sosyal demokrasi ve küresel çevrede sosyal demokrasi üzerine akademik literatür incelenecektir.
