Ladas, Pentzopoulos and the Turco-Greek Exchange of Populations: An analysis of a metanarrative

Ladas, Pentzopoulos ve Türk-Yunan Nüfus Mübadelesi: Bir üst-anlatının anlatısı

Abstract

The Turco-Greek Exchange of Populations agreed at Lausanne (1923) was a worldhistorical event as it marked the first forceful removal of minorities under the auspices of an international organization (League of Nations). Despite the predicaments and suffering it inflicted upon the people, the Exchange was attributed a success story for having resolved inter-state conflict and consolidating the nationstate by providing its ethnic-religious homogenization. Since the occurrence of the event, this success paradigm has been incorporated into the academic discourse and political rhetoric and publicly acclaimed especially in the 1930s and 1990s when ethnic nationalism was at its heyday. The present study examines two major texts that fabricated the meta-narrative of the Exchange as a successful undertaking. In light of the recent critical scholarship, it shows that the meta-narrative of the Exchange is unfounded in terms of its facts, assumptions and conclusions.

1923te Lozanda karara bağlanan Türk-Yunan Nüfus Mübadelesi, uluslararası bir örgüt tarafından (Cemiyet-i Akvam) onanan ilk zorunlu göç hareketi olarak tarihe geçmiştir. Yarattığı birçok soruna rağmen, Mübadele, ülkeler arası ihtilafı çözen ve etnik/dinî türdeşliği sağlamak suretiyle ulus-devleti pekiştiren bir olay olarak bir tür başarı öyküsü haline dönüştürülmüştür. Gerçekleştiği andan günümüze değin, özellikle etnik milliyetçiliğin yükseldiği iki ayrı dönem olan 1930larda ve 1990larda, bu başarı öyküsü hem siyasi hem de akademik söylemde geniş yankı bulmuştur. Bu çalışma, Mübadeleye atfedilen başarı öyküsünün bir tür üst-anlatı haline gelmesini sağlayan iki temel metni konuyla ilgili son dönemde ortaya çıkan eleştirel tarih yazını ışığında ele alarak, bu üst-anlatının olguları, varsayımları ve çıkarımları açısından dayanaktan yoksun olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
