How Effective is Financial System to Reduce Income Inequality? A Regional Panel Data Analysis for Turkish Economy

Abstract

Although neoliberal theory asserts that income inequality would be offset from higher to lower income groups, the experiences of the real world have shown that most of the population in countries have failed to reach benefits from economic and financial growth. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between financial development and income inequality by using panel data analysis for 12 sub-regions in the preiod of 2006-2012 in Turkish economy. The estimation results point out that the financial development process raises the incomes of the rich, but not for that of the poor. Besides, some control variables are included in the regression models to verify the estimation results and the findings show that financial development accelerates the income inequality. Consequently, it can clearly be said that the divergence process between the rich and the poor is valid in Turkey.

Özet

Neoliberal teori; gelir eşitsizliklerinin, yüksek gelir gruplarından düşük gelir gruplarına doğru telafi edilebileceğini öne sürmesine rağmen, gerçek dünya deneyimleri nüfusun büyük bir kısmının ekonomik ve finansal büyümenin faydalarına ulaşmakta başarısız olduğunu göstermiştir. Dolayısıyla bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye ekonomisinde 12 alt-bölge itibariyle finansal kalkınma ve gelir eşitsizliği arasındaki ilişkileri 2006-2012 dönemi için panel veri analizlerini kullanarak incelemektir. Tahmin sonuçları, finansal kalkınma sürecinin zengin sınıfın gelir düzeyini artırdığını, ancak benzer sürecin yoksul sınıfın gelir düzeyi için geçerli olmadığını göstermiştir. Ayrıca, tahmin sonuçlarını teyit edebilmek amacıyla bazı kontrol değişkenleri de regresyon modellerine dahil edilmiş ve bulgular, finansal kalkınmanın gelir eşitsizliklerini hızlandırdığını ortaya koymuştur. Sonuç olarak, Türkiyede zengin ve yoksul sınıf arasında ıraksama sürecinin geçerli olduğu görülmüştür.
