Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the level of knowledge of the patients who apply to the general surgery polyclinic for any reason other than colorectal diseases on colorectal cancer screening. Material-Method: The research was planned as crosssectional and descriptive. The data of the research was collected by face to face interviews with 150 patients who applied to GATA General Surgery Polyclinic between December 2013 and December 2014 and who accepted to participate in the research. Turkish speaking, literate patients who are 18 years old or older are included in the research. In data collection form, there are questions to determine the level of knowledge about the patients’ demographic characteristics and colorectal cancer screening programs. Percentage, frequency, average, chi square, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis Test was used to analyze. Results: The mean age of the participants in the study was determined as =41,49±13,95. In this study, it was founded that 37,3%, 13,3%, 62% and 13,3% of the patients have knowledge about fecal occult blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, double-contrast barium enema, respectively. While 16% of the patients know the age of starting colorectal cancer screening, 52,7% of the patients answered the question regarding the frequency of screening correctly. Conclusion: In our study, it has been seen that the level of knowledge about the colorectal cancer screening of the participants is not on the desired level. When considering the incidence of colorectal cancer, raising awareness of the public and increasing the participation in screening programs are important matters in terms of early diagnosis and treatment. It is important that the all healthcare workers do their duties effectively in terms of increasing the public’s level of knowledge and increasing the participation in screening programs.
