THE TRIUMPH OF KUT’ÜL AMARE IN THE PARTIES’ PRESS

Abstract
In the World War I, at the end of 1915 and the first halfof 1916, in the Iraqi front General Townshend was in command of British forces and firstly Colonel Nureddin then Colonel Halil Bey commanded Ottoman forces. The Ku tü ’l Amare siege which took place in this front was the longest siege in the history of England. British forces had to give up the struggle in the fifth month ofthe siege. On 29th April, 1916, 13 300 British soldiers were delivered as prisoner of war. Kutii’l Amare siege appeared in Turkish and foreign press widely both during the siege and after the victory. The defeat ofthe British forces was questioned by the press. In this study we, firstly, tried to summarize the history of the military stage ofthe siege and then study how the victory of Ottoman forces took place in the press of both side.

Birinci Cihan Harbi'nde Irak Cephesi'nde 1915'in sonları ve 1916'nın ilk yarısında İngiliz kuvvetlerini General Townshend, Osmanlı kuvvetlerine ise Irak Ordusu Komutanı Albay Nureddin ve daha sonra Albay Halil Bey komuta etti. Bu cephede gerçekleşen Kutü'l Amare kuşatması İngilizlerin tarihinde en uzun kuşatmadır. Kuşath beşinci ayında İngiliz ordusu teslim olmak zorunda kaldı. 29 Nisan 1916 günü gerçekleşen bu olayda 13.300 lq'şilik İngiliz ordusu harp esiri olarak teslim alındı. Kutü'l Amare kuşatması, hem kuşatma boyunca hem de zafer kazanıldıktan sonra Türk ve yabancı basınmda geniş bir şekilde yer aldı. İngiliz ordusunun yenilgi sebepleri sorgulandı. Bu çalışmada kuşatmanm askeri tarihi özetlenerek Osmanlı'nm kazandığı zaferin tarafların basınındaki yankıları incelenmeye çalışıldı.
