Abstract

Analyzing Börüteçene’s exhibition this work aims to put the necessity of evaluating contemporary art work in its historical/ socio- cultural context, by defining its interactions with other issues (like other art disciplines, urban aesthetic and social facts), the way it is exhibited and its physical/ conceptual relation with the space, its contact with the audience, its material and technique and artists intellectual/spiritual approaches and opinions on his/her work form the phase of production to its representation. More than a 30 years artistic career Handan Börüteçene has been a prominent figure in Turkish art scene as well as the international one. Her art is deeply connected with history. The concept of “history” is used there in a broad meaning which refers not only to the civilizations existed in her country but also to her personal life. The resulting art work reach up to universal messages by intersecting with the common past of human being. The art of Börüteçene has mostly a visual language which grows in connection with the space. Thought and designed with in the context of aspecific space her works come into existence with the form, material and technique features that are determined in accordance to the context of the exhibition. Being the subject of this article Börüteçene’s exhibition named “I stayed burried to myself” in 2014 at Istanbul Archeological Museum is also designed in connection with the space. This exhibition has a background that can be followed in the oeuvre of the artist which proceeded from the Purple Millennium of Mediterranean exhibition in 1999 in Istanbul and enriched with the Venice exhibitions in 2007. The theme of the exhibition is the imaginative past of Istanbul and this is represented by a garment as a kind of ghost. The garment is deeply connected with the history of the city, focuses to the Latin Invasion Period (1204) and has references with the Istanbul- Venice relations. With its features of color and form and thanks to its composition and symbolic expression this garment has a multilayer context. This exhibition allows the visitors to be a part of the work by thinking and being aware of the artist’s emphasis.
