Abstract

This research examines how gender is being reflected in the representations of films which focus on external migration in Turkish cinema after 1990’s. The aim of this research is to examine the changes and transformations on identities due to migration from a gender perspective. In this framework, the research tried to give an answer to the question of whether migration is transforming gender and if so how is it transforming. The representations on changes within gender due to the fragilities within national identities and cultural transformations as a consequence of migration are analyzed by looking through the discourses within representations. In this context films of the directors whom themselves experienced migration and who focus on migration issues on their films is analyzed. Two films of the 1990’s (Sarı Mersedes, T.Okan,1992) (Hamam, F.Özpetek,1997); two films from 2000’s (Duvara Karşı, F. Akın, 2004) (Yaşamın Kıyısında, F. Akın,2007) and two films from 2010’s (Almanya’ya Hoşgeldiniz, Y.Şamdereli,2011) (Kuma, U.Dağ, 2012) is analyzed by using discourse analysis method based on the assumption that hybrid identities are common representations within films that focus on migration and that these also reflect as well on the gender roles and representations throughout the film narrative and that they are embedded within discourses. By looking at the discourses of the main characters, the research has questioned whether the changes within gender performances is related to the transformations within cultural identities assuming that the transformations on cultural identities are parallel to the transformations on gender structure. While analyzing the discourses around gender on films focusing on migration, the research also used theoretical approaches from cultural studies such as Nira Yuval Davis, Stuart Hall, Ian Chambers, Immanuel Wallerstein and George Simmel.

Özet

Bu araştırma 1990 sonrası Türk sinemasında yer alan dış göç filmlerindeki temsillerde toplumsal cinsiyetin nasıl yansıtıldığını incelemektedir. Araştırmanın amacı, dış göçün kimlikler üzerinde oluşturduğu değişim ve dönüşümleri toplumsal cinsiyet bakış açısıyla ele almaktır. Bu çerçevede araştırmada, göç olgusu toplumsal cinsiyeti dönüştürmekte midir veya nasıl dönüştürmektedir sorusunun cevabı açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Göç olgusuyla yaşanan ulusal kimlikteki kırılmalar, kültürel dönüşümler ve kimlik sorunları ekseninde toplumsal cinsiyette meydana gelen değişimler seçilmiş olan dış göç filmlerindeki ana karakterlerin söylemlerine bakılarak çözümlenmiştir. Bu kapsamda her biri Türkiye’den yurtdışına göç etmiş yönetmenlerin göç olgusunu ele aldıkları filmlerden 1990’lı yıllara ait iki film (Sarı Mersedes, T.Okan,1992) (Hamam, F.Özpetek,1997), 2000’li yıllara ait iki film (Duvara Karşı, F.Akın,2004) (Yaşamın Kıyısında, F.Akın,2007) ve 2010’lu yıllara ait iki film (Almanya’ya Hoşgeldiniz, Y.Şamdereli,2011) (Kuma, U.Dağ,2012) filmleri göç temsillerinde melezleşmiş bir kimlik imgelemi bulunduğu, bunun toplumsal cinsiyet rol ve temsillerine yansıdığı ve de bunların filmin anlatı yapısı içerisinde söylemlere yedirildiği varsayımından hareketle söylem analizi yöntemi kullanılarak çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma filmlerde yer alan temel karakterlerin söylemlerinden yola çıkarak, göçle birlikte gelişen kültürel kimlikteki dönüşümlerin toplumsal cinsiyet yapısındaki dönüşümlerle paralel olup olmadığını, kültürel kimliğin toplumsal cinsiyet yapısı ile paralelliği bulunduğu varsayımıyla ele alınmıştır. Araştırmada, dış göç filmlerinde yer alan toplumsal cinsiyete dair söylemleri çözümlerken kültürel çalışmalar alanından Nira Yuval Davis, Stuart Hall, Ian Chambers, Immanuel Wallerstein ile George Simmel’in kuramsal yaklaşımlarından yararlanılmıştır.
