IN THE CONTEXT OF CITY AND SCULPTURE: HORTUS CONCLUSUS

Abstract
Subject of this article is the art work named “Hortus Conclusus” located at downtown Benevento in Italy. The main objective of the article is to examine the project for reorganization of the area where Padri Domenicani Monastery garden is located as a public domain, which has been out of use and maintenance for a long time at Benevento downtown in the context of city and sculpture relationship. First of all, history and cultural attributes of the area where the work is located has been examined, and then physical characteristics of the work has been examined. In order to analyze the relationship between the elements constituting the artist’s work and the history of the city, collection of Sannio Museum which is significant in terms of Benevento city history has been examined. In the light of Guilio Camillo’s utopia of compiling the entire information about the universe at one place, symbolic meanings attributed to Hortus Conclusus sculpture designed like a memory theatre by the artist Mimmo Paladino are studied. Each urban area has its own authentic physical, historical attributes, experiencing and behavioral forms. Public Art works have the power of influencing those location-specific attributes. Physical, historical attributes of the location of fixed sculpture application named “Hortus Conclusus” which is created with a deep location analysis is based on the experiences and behaviors, and it has been a significant exemplar in terms of carrying this memory to present time, bringing a new voice to urban areas with the fixed art works and creating qualified public areas.
Özet
Bu makale İtalya’nın Benevento kentinin merkezinde yer alan, “Hortus Conclusus” adlı sanat yapıtını konu almaktadır. Benevento kent merkezinde, uzun süre atıl ve bakımsız kalmış bir alan olan Padri Domenicani Manastırı bahçesinin bulunduğu alanı kamusal alan olarak tekrar düzenleyen bu projenin kent ve heykel ilişkisi bağlamında irdelenmesi makalenin ana amacıdır. Öncelikle, yapıtın bulunduğu yer'in, geçmişi, fiziksel ve kültürel özellikleri incelenmiş daha sonra yapıtın fiziksel özellikleri incelenmiştir. Sanatçının yapıtını oluşturan elemanların kentin tarihi ile olan ilişkisinin çözümlenmesi için Benevento kent tarihi açısından önemli olan Sannio Müzesi'nin sahip olduğu kolleksiyon incelenmiştir. Guilio Camillo'nun evrene ait bütün bilgiyi aynı mekanda toplayabilmekle ilgili ütopyası ışığında, sanatçı Mimmo Paladino'nun, bir hafıza tiyatrosu gibi tasarladığı, Hortus Conculusus adlı yapıtına yüklediği sembolik anlamlar irdelenmiştir. Her kentsel alanın kendine özgü fiziksel, tarihsel özellikleri, deneyimleme ve davranış biçimleri vardır. Sanat yapıtlarının yer'e özgü bu özellikleri etkileme güçleri vardır. Derin bir mekan analizi yapılarak gerçekleştirilen “Hortus Conclusus” adlı kalıcı heykel uygulaması gerçekleştirildiği yer'in fiziksel, tarihsel özellikleri, deneyimle ve davranış biçimleri üzerine temellenmiş, bu belleği bugüne taşıyarak kalıcı sanat yapıtlarıyla kentsel alanda, yeni sözler söylenebileceği ve nitelikli kamusal alanlar yaratılabilineceğine dair önemli bir örnek olmuştur.
