The leech as an unusual cause of epistaxis, chronic anemia and obstruction of upper respiratory tract: Our experiences due to two cases

Abstract
The obstruction of upper airways with foreign bodies is a commonly encountered phenomenon, which is mostly seen in infants of 1-6 years old. The leech is an endoparasite for man and may cause lethal complications. In this article, we report the case of a 9-year-old child who presented intermittent epis-taxis and severe anemia and other case of 29-year-old adult who presented obstruction of upper respiratory tracks due to leech infestation and review the literature on this subject. In those patients in contact with leech especially in rural areas, it should always be borne in mind that this endoparasite might cause high mortality and morbidity due to serious complications such as severe anemia and obstruction of upper respiratory tracts.
Özet
Üst hava yollarının yabancı cisimlerle obstruksiyonu, daha çok 1-6 yaşlarındaki çocuklarda görülen ve sık karşılaşılan bir durumdur. Sülük insanlar için bir endoparazittir ve ölümcül komplikasyonlara sebep olabilir. Bu makalede, sülüğe bağlı üst solunum yolu obstruksiyonu gelişen bir olgu ile, aralıklı burun kanaması ve derin anemiye neden olan diğer olguyu literatür ışığı altında irdeledik. Özellikle kırsal kesimlerde sülük ile temasta olan hastalarda, bu endoparazitin derin anemi ve üst solunum yolu obstruksiyonu gibi ciddi komplikasyonlardan dolayı, yüksek mortalite ve morbiditeye neden olabileceği her zaman akılda tutulmalıdır.
