Abstract

Objective: Hepatitis B virus infection is one of the major health problems in the developing countries. The present study was conducted to document the frequency of Hepatitis B seropositivity in children in İsparta. Methods: Venous blood samples were tested for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 169 children (89 girls and 80 boys) under 15 years of age. Results: The prevalence of HBsAg and Anti-HBs among the girls were 2.2% and 2.2% and among the boys were 2.5% and 2.5%, respectively. The overall seropositivity of children was 4.7%. Conclusion: There is a low frequency of HBV seropositive individuals of both sexes among children in this study group. These frequencies obtained for İsparta region compare well with figures from the eastern Turkey and the other developing countries.
