Abstract
Scientific Background: Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) is the most frequent cranial neuropathy and may originate from various kind of damage to the 7th cranial nerve. Although it seems that there is a connection with between PFP and Herpes simplex viruses reactivations in recent articles. As a classical, however, investigations fail to establish a definite etiology in the majority of cases. That time it is commonly referred idiopathic PFP or Bell's palsy. It is not well known whether there is any effect of seasonal, geographic, race/ethnic and environmental factors on BP. Objective: To assesses value of seasonal effect on BP frequency. Material and Methods: We investigated as a retrospective a hundred six patients with BP who were diagnosed according to their neurological examination at two private hospitals' out-patient clinics in Ankara. Data were analyzed according to age, gender, side of the face, recurrence, and seasonal distribution of cases. Results: The study consisted of 106 patients (59 women and 47 men), mean age was 37. There were 55 right side BP, and 51 on the left. Most patients were seen spring and autumn, 35 and 27 respectively. The smallest numbers of the patients (21 patients) were seen on summer. Among the months, the most patients (14 patients) were seen on May and then April (12 patients) and December (12 patients). Conclusion: It seems there was an increase of BP frequency in spring and autumn, even though statically significant was not obtained.
Hastaların 51'i sol ve 55'i sağ taraf yüz felci ile başvurmuştu.
