Abstract

In an effort to obtain a gas fired heat pump with COPs (coefficient of performance) comparable to those obtained with electric heat pumps, an alternative system that consists of a Rankine power cycle and a vapor-compression cycle have been developed. Operating this heat pump system with R123/R22 (dichlorotrifluoroethane/chlorodifluoromethane) combination, energy consumption for both heating and cooling in a residential building facing different directions (east/west, north, and, south) in Columbus (40 °N), Ohio and Los Angeles (34 °N), California, U.S.A. was estimated. The heat pump system met all the heating and almost all the cooling requirements of the residential building at all orientations. It was concluded that the proposed heat pump system performed very well in the residential building and for minimum energy consumption, this particular residential structure should be built facing south which would result in energy savings up to 5 %.
