Abstract

Since the time when the term "catharsis" was coined by Aristotle, it has been used in a number of ways in very different artistic disciplines. Catharsis, whose roots are in tragedy (on television) survives in popular culture by clinging to media habits. Modern research shows that an audience (observer) of tragedy becomes more confused, instead of becoming adjusted to witnessing aggression. Was Aristotle mistaken? This is a question considered by many researchers with varied answers. The name of Thespis, who invented the genre with which Aristotle started catharsis, is today no longer commonly used, even though he acted as the first "cleanser/ Catharsist". Even worse is the fact that Antiphon is not widely known, with or without his connection to this subject. Through his speeches (mostly the tetralogy), which are similar to those in crime stories, with their unexpected endings (as opposed to tragedies), he prepared ca tharsis as another and relatively more useful approach. In this short article we have tried to respond to the early stages and pioneers of Catharsis, Mimesis, and the Aristotle’s understanding of Mimesis. Translation issues of " Ἔλεος" (eleos) and "Φόβος" (phobos) are also considered. We can see how the differences in perception from the time when catharsis was created actually slip into the ingredients of Antiphon’s stories.
