The press in the Ottoman modernization

Abstract

This study elaborates on the place and significance of the press in modernization. Mankind has always greatly appreciated the concept of information. For thousands of years societies have gathered both experiences and inventions and collected them into books in order to pass them on to the next generations. This process was accelerated by the press. From the beginning, using books and the culture of books, precise and consistent information was provided and checking the accuracy of information became easier. Various cases of false information, based on rumour and false reports, lost their validity through the use of books. Thus information became clearer and gained scientific validity. In addition, the necessity of transmission of more current information to the masses through immediate publication paved the way for the emergence of journals.

Özet

Bu çalışmamızda modernleşmede matbuatın yeri ve önemi üzerinde duracağız. Bilgi bütün insanlığın en çok değer verdiği kavram olmuştur. Binlerce yıldan bu yana toplumlar gerek edinilmiş tecrübeleri, gerekse yapılan buluşları sonraki nesillere aktarma adına bir araya toplayarak kitaplaştırmışlardır. Bu da basının sayesinde ivme kazanmıştır. Kitap ve kültürünün kullanılmaya başlamasıyla kesin ve kalıcı bilgiye ulaşıldığı gibi, bilginin doğruluğunun sorgulanması da kolaylaşmıştır. Söylenti ve yanlış tecrübelere dayanan çeşitli kirli bilgiler kitabın kullanılmasıyla geçerliliğini kaybetmiştir. Böylelikle bilgiler daha fazla netleşmiş, bilimsel geçerlilik kazanmıştır. Öte yandan daha güncel olan bilgileri yayın yolu ile anında kitlelere ulaştırma gerekliliği gazete mantığının doğmasına ortam hazırlamıştır.
