Abstract
In 193 patients with acute ischemic stroke, early signs of cerebral ischemia on head computed tomography (CT), performed within 12 hours of symptoms onset, were evaluated to determine their relationship to the localization of infarction and admission neurological status. Initial CT was abnormal in 39,9 % of the patients. Glasgow coma score was < 6 in 25,9% of the patients with abnormal CT scan and in 59,2% of the patients with hyperdense middle cerebral artery sign. Clinical severity of neurological deficit at onset was well correlated to the early CT abnormalities. There was a significant correlation between the initial CT findings and localization of infarction, in every patient with available follow-up scans.
