Abstract
Located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, the Persian Gulf shores have hosted many civilizations throughout Ancient History. Developing civilizations on the shores of the Gulf, which is an inland sea, benefited from the natural possibilities of this geographical position. In this framework the sea played a significant role in their economic life. Therefore, fishing, pearl fishing and maritime trade had been among the economic activities carried out by the civilizations of the region since the early periods. The Persian Gulf is an intersection, where international trade routes (land, sea and river roads) meet. Because of its strategic location, it has been the area of struggle for the great states that wanted to establish their commercial domination in the region throughout the history. In this study, the course of trade relations in the Persian Gulf during the ancient period will be discussed and the importance of this Gulf in terms of the old world will be emphasized.
