Abstract

One of the main problems that the Ottoman State had to deal with in the 19th century was surely the rebellion of Mehmet Ali Pasha. Sultan Mahmud, who abolished the Janissary army in 1826, lost the new army he was trying to form during the 1827-28 Ottoman-Russian war, and lost his navy with the ambush at Navarino, was hopeless against the forces of Mehmet Ali Pasha. The Egyptian army defeated the Ottoman forces several times and marched as far as Bursa. The Governor of Egypt wanted the control over whole Syria, and the sancaqs of Adana, Içel and Alanya to be given to him. The Sultan, who could not deal with an ordinary governor, had to ask help from the Russians. The events that developed in this way lead to the signing of the treaty of Hunkar İskelesi.
