Abstract

In the ancient times, the Troas, today known as the Biga Peninsula, has been exposed to tsunami catastrophes that have been produced by the earthquakes of the Propontis (=Marmara Sea) and Aigaios Pontos (=Aegean Sea). However, it is very difficult to detect the tsunami that occurred in the ancient times. The inadequacy of resources and the ancient peoples’ religious beliefs on natural events also make it more difficult. On the other hand, both pagan writers and Christian church historians give information about the earthquakes and tsunamis. Based on the archaeological findings, archaeologists have revealed that Troy, one of the oldest and most important cities of Troas, has been exposed to tsunamis since its foundation. While settlements such as Assos, Aleksandria Troas, Antandros, etc. were exposed by Aigaios Pontos centered tsunamis, cities such as Parion and Lampsakos were exposed to the effect of Propontiscentered tsunamis. The cities on both sides of Hellespont (Callipolis, Cardia, etc.) also affected by the Aigaios Pontos and Propontis centered tsunamis.
