An Analysis of the Relationship Between Handwriting Writing Skills and Academic Achievement

Abstract
The present study was conducted to examine the relationship between students’ handwriting skill and their academic success. The sample group of the study, in which the relationship survey was employed, consisted of 44 eighth grade students, who were chosen by means of the criterion sampling method. The sources of the research data were the students’ written responses to the open-ended questions in their course exams and their Placement Scores (PS) in the exam (TEOG) held in Turkey at the end of elementary school as an entrance exam to middle schools. The students’ handwriting ability were evaluated by using the “Handwriting Observation Form”. To analyze the data, SPSS 15 was utilized. The results of the study revealed that there was no significant correlation between the handwriting skill and academic success; however, a negative correlation of moderate significance was found between handwriting and mathematics, one of the four foundation courses.
Özet
Bu çalışma öğrencilerin el yazısı yazma becerileri ile akademik başarıları arasındaki ilişkinin incelemesi amacıyla yürütülmüştür. İlişkisel taramanın kullanıldığı bu araştırmanın örneklemini 8. sınıfta öğrenim gören 44 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Bu öğrenciler ölçüt örneklemesi yöntemi kullanılarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırma verileri, öğrencilerin derslerindeki açık uçlu sınavlara verdikleri yazılı cevaplar ve Türkiye’de yapılan temel eğitimden orta öğretime geçiş sınavında (TEOG) alınan Yerleştirmeye Esas Puanlarından (YEP) elde edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin el yazıları “El Yazısı Yazma Becerisi Gözlem Formu” doğrultusunda değerlendirilmiştir. Veri analizinde SPSS 15 kullanılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda el yazısı yazma becerisi ile akademik başarı arasında anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilememiş; fakat dört temel dersten matematik dersi ile el yazısı yazma becerisi arasında negatif yönde orta düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuştur.
