Abstract

The two well preserved grave steles with anthemia on exhibition in the Archaeological Mu-seum of Isparta were brought to light by looters. The finding spot is the so called tumulus of Delipinar grave monument, which is located in the ancient site of Tymandos, 2 km in the East of the Yassıören county, district of Senirkent, province of Isparta. The steles consist of 2.80 m high oblong blocks, while the height of the anthemia is 30-35 cm. The anthemion crowns are formed by 23 or 24 leaves of palmettes. Close to these steles was found a third relief with the figure of a sphinx measuring 137 x 100 x 32 cm. The sphinx which is moving to the right is placed in a pediment shaped frame. These three pieces were docu-mented with photographs in 1974 by Nesrin and Mehmet Özsait, and presented to the academic public in 2005. Thereafter they were mentioned in the Isparta museums catalogue, and then analysed in detail and scientifically by B. Hürmüzlü. This scholar noted rightly that both anthemion steles were contemporaneous and works of the same atelier because of their technical and iconographical characteristics. As a result of the stylistic analogies with Ionic steles she proposed a date in the late 6th century BC. As we disagree with Hürmüzlü’s chronological proposal we compared the steles typologically and stylistically with exemplars from the Cycladic islands like Amorgos and Paros. The result is that the steles from Delipinar/Isparta should be dated in the years 480-470 BC. The third relief depicts the figure of a sphinx with the head of a woman, the body of a lion and wings of a bird. The sphinx has a plump and heavy body, and the beefy legs are moving forwards. The feathers look similar to the anthemion palmettes. Beside this the broad, heavy and hanging shape of the face and the thick, fleshy eyelids causing a surly physiognomy are clear characte-ristics of the Severe Style. In this regard the sphinx can be compared with the remarkable relief called “L’exaltation de la fleur” in the Louvre which can be dated around 470 BC. The relief of the sphinx is contemporaneous with the Anthemion steles and therefore must be part of the same grave construction. It was probably the product of one of the famous workshops of Paros.
