Abstract

Kant’s writings on the conflict between the higher faculties (theology, law, and medicine) whose teachings are compatible with the goals of the government itself and the lower faculty (philosophy) which is subject only to laws given by reason in the Prussian university system have always attracted strong academic interest. However, it is also clear that Kant’s critique of the faculty of medicine has been neglected compared to ohers. In this article, the main contours of Kant’s views on medicine and his criticism of the faculty of medicine will be discussed with reference to the Enlightenment’s close in-volvement with medicine, the tensions that divide German medicine within itself, the status of the relations between the government’s public health policies and the medical discipline, and finally, the complex relations between philosophy and medicine.
