Abstract

In various sources on Ottoman poetry it is often argued that the major aim of the poet in writing fahriye is to prove his superiority to other poets and that for this purpose the poet employs highly exaggerated metaphors and expressions and makes descriptions highly removed from reality. When the examples of fahriye of the Divan poetry tradition from the 14th century onwards are analyzed, however, it can be seen that the poet’s major aim in employing elaborate patterns of praise is not to prove his superiority to others but to answer questions as to what an ideal poet should be like. This study attempts to evaluate the fahriye form anew by comparing thoughts on poetry and the poet found in tezkires and divan prefaces with the qualities of an ideal poet as suggested in the fahriye sections of Ottoman poetry.

Özet

Fahriye bölümlerinde şairin kendini diğer şairlerden üstün konumda göstermek için uç benzetmelere ve mübalağalı ifadelere yer verdiği ve gerçeklikten uzak tasvirler ortaya koyduğu kaynaklarda tekrarlanır. Hâlbuki, 14. yüzyıldan başlayarak Divan şiiri geleneği boyunca devam eden fahriye örnekleri gözden geçirildiğinde, bilinenin aksine, şairin bu bölümlerde ifade ettiği övgü kalıplarıyla ideal bir şair nasıl olmalıdır sorusuna cevap verdiği görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada, fahriyelerden yola çıkarak, ideal şairlik ölçüleri, tezkirelerde ve divan dibacelerinde yer alan şairlik ve şiir üzerine düşünceler ile karşılaştırılarak fahriye hakkında yeni yargılara varılmaya çalışılacaktır.
