Is Metathesis Related to the Syllabic System of Turkish?

Abstract

This paper looks into the relationship between metathesis – the phenomenon of sound change – and the syllabic system of Turkish. The examples we made use of were selected from a corpus of Turkish dialects and from Hasan Eren’s Etymological Dictionary of the Turkish Language. In Turkish metathesis does not happen mechanically and without reason. On the contrary, it is closely related to the syllabic system of Turkish, which has been arranged in line with the Sonority Sequencing Principle (SSP).

Bu yazıda metatez diye adlandırılan ses değişmeleri ile Türkçenin hece sistemi arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırdık. Kullandığımız örnekler Türkçenin ağızlarından ve Hasan Eren’in Türk Dilinin Etimolojik Sözlüğü’nden alındı. Metatez olayı nedensiz ve mekanik bir ses değişikliği değildir, bilakis Sonorantlık Sıralama Prensibi (SSP) tarafından düzenlenen Türkçenin hece sistemiyle yakından ilişkilidir.
