Abstract

Considered as one of the best Turkish novelists, Tarık Buğra (1918-1994) was also remarkable for the short stories he wrote at the early stages of his writing career. Buğra made his living through writing, and after a while he had to stop writing short stories because of the low income it brought. From the first to the last, Buğra’s short stories may be said to have a considerable literary value. Only 56 of his 82 stories published in various journals and newspapers have been compiled and published in book form. Today the only available collection of his short stories is a book titled There Is Nothing Called Tomorrow, which includes 34 stories selected by Buğra himself. Tarık Buğra more often wrote short stories about “situations”. In almost all of his stories, Buğra deals with the problems of a continuously changing life in constant renewal and suggests that we can also get to love the outsiders of this renewed world. The protagonists of Buğra’s stories are often alike, and “restless”, “troubled” and “lonely” people constitute the majority of his characters.
