Abstract
Folk medicine, which constitutes the origins of the sciences of medicine and pharmacy, is made up of applications based on religion, magic, reason, and experience. It is possible to come across some related elements in Turkic epics. This study first gives information about the concepts of death, disease and treatment in folk medicine and touches upon examples for these in Turkic epics. Afterwards, it identifies motifs related to folk medicine in 23 epics by the Altai Turks, 8 by the Khakas, 15 by the Shorian and 16 by the Tuva, all of whom live in Siberia and share a mutual epic tradition. The study shows the relationship between these motifs and Turkish culture.
