Abstract

Each city is expected to have its own characteristic features. If a city has qualities that distinguish it from other cities, it may be possible to mention the existence of a city identity for that city. This study aims to address the concept of urban identity in the context of the historical bazaars that form the historical urban centers. For this purpose, the cities of Skopje and Sarajevo, reflecting the model of Balkan cities of the Ottoman period, were examined in accordance with the identity qualities they carried from the past to the present. In the study, the conceptual framework for collective memory and urban identity was presented and then the contribution of Old Bazaar and Başçarşı samples to urban identity was evaluated through the data obtained as a result of the literature research.
