Abstract
This study investigates elementary school students’ capabilities to use problem solving strategies and self-regulation techniques in solving non-routine problems. The research employing qualitative case study was carried out with the participation of 160 students. The data were obtained from the written exam consisting of problems that can be solved with different strategies and the semistructured interviews applied afterwards. The collected data were analysed using content and discourse analysis methods. The results indicated that most of the participants displayed result-oriented problem solving approaches. It was observed that they mostly preferred using single strategy including, such as, guess and check and writing an algebraic equation. The results showed that the majority of the participants are inadequate in using the strategies that require high level cognitive effort such as pattern search/relationship and in understanding the underlying meaning of the strategies and the relationships between them. Although it varies on the basis of the problems, it was found that a small number of participants utilised their self-regulation skills to realize their own mistakes and correct them. Qualitative findings indicated the existence of a positive relationship between strategy use and self-regulation skills. It was observed that the students with good strategy use skills noticed and corrected the mistakes, they exhibited while solving, by using a different strategy. On the other hand, it was noted that students with good self-regulation competencies were able to identify the mistakes they exhibited while solving with a strategy and make the necessary corrections without changing the strategy. Research findings suggest that students with high level of strategy use proficiency are more successful in detecting and correcting their own mistakes.
