Natural radioactivity measurements of limes used as building materials (Ceyhan - Adana) in East Mediterranean Region

Abstract
In this study, the gamma-ray spectrometry measurements of quicklimes and slaked limes used as building materials (Ceyhan Region-Adana) in East Mediterranean Region (Turkey) were performed. The detailed 226Ra,232Th and 40K natural radioactivity values of the study area were determined for quicklimes and slaked limes in Ceyhan region. In addition, the mean radioactivity concentrations of the natural nuclides in quicklimes, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were calculated to be 23.26, 3.78 and 17.05 Bq kg-1. Also the mean radioactivity concentrations of the natural nuclides in slaked limes, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were calculated to be 33.26, 3.18 and 23.44 Bq kg-1, respectively. However, the mean activity concentrations, Raeq for quicklimes and slaked limes in Ceyhan region were 29.99 ve 39.62 Bq kg-1. As a result, the radioactivity concentrations of slaked limes have higher values than quicklimes in Ceyhan region. But in general, these results indicate that the radioactivity concentrations in two building materials are found to be under the risk levels.

Bu çalısmada, Türkiye’nin Doğu Akdeniz Bölgesinde bulunan ve civar yerlesim birimlerine, yapı malzemesi açısından önemli katkı sağlayan, Ceyhan yöresi kireçtaslarından üretilen, sönmemis ve sönmüs kireçlerde, gamma spektrometrik ölçümler yapılmıstır. 226Ra, 232Th ve 40K doğal radyonüklitlerinin konsantrasyon ölçümleri hem Ceyhan yöresi sönmemis kireçlerinde, hem de sönmüs kireçlerinde gerçeklestirilmistir. Sönmemis kireçlerde, ölçülen ortalama 226Ra, 232Th ve 40K konsantrasyonları sırasıyla, 23.26, 3.78 ve 17.05 Bq kg-1’dir. Sönmüs kireçlerde ise ölçülen ortalama 226Ra, 232Th ve 40K konsantrasyonları sırasıyla, 33.26, 3.18 ve 23.44 Bq kg-1’dir. Ortalama Raeq ölçümleri ise, Ceyhan yöresi sönmemis ve sönmüs kireçleri için sırasıyla, 29.99 ve 39.62 Bq kg-1’dır. Sonuç olarak, Ceyhan yöresi sönmüs kireçlerinde radyoaktivitik konsantrasyon değerleri, sönmemis kireçlerden daha yüksek olmakla beraber, her iki kireç gurubundan elde edilen verilerin, riskli seviyelerin altında olduğu tespit edilmistir.
