Abstract
In this study, the process of cyanide adaptation and the performance of cyanide removal in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASBR) were examined. The requirement of organic carbon during the cyanide removal was also investigated. The reactor operated with the 24 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) was continuously fed with increasing cyanide concentrations from lmg/L to 130mg/L. Adaptation was observed at the 110 mg/L cyanide concentration in the UASBR. The cyanide removal has decreased from 99% to 94% with increasing cyanide loading from 1 mg/L to 110 mg/L. During the cyanide removal, influent COD concentrations has been decreased from 3000 mg/L to 1500, 500 and 250 mg/L, respectively. UASBR was not affected negatively by decreased COD concentrations at 1500 mg/L and 500 mg/L. Whereas, for the 250 mg/L COD concentration, effluent cyanide concentration in UASBR increased from 7-8 mg/L to 50 mg/L.
