Abstract
The management of parotid gland tumors continues to be a challenge to otolaryngologists, pathologists, oncologists and radiation oncologists. Definitive diagnosis of tumors requires microscopic examination. However, the minimum biopsy procedure for any parotid gland tumor should be a superficial parotidectomy and an incisional biopsy should never be performed. Although these principles are well known by the otolaryngologist, there may be lack of experience in other disciplines. The authors present their experience with 593 parotid gland tumors. Retrospective analysis of 593 cases which had been treated between 1964 and 1998 were done. Treatment, pathologic diagnosis, and ultimate outcome were presented. The factors influencing recurrence were discussed.
