Abstract

Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas, that constitute % 0.05 of all head and neck tumors are more likely to occur in adolescent males. It has been shown that these tumors express positivity towards androgen receptors and tumor diameter and vascularity can be reduced through estrogen treatment. Besides some authors postulating that estrogen has a direct effect on the estrogen receptors possessing tumor tissue, some believe that tumors may be receptorfree and the administration of estro¬gen supresses the normal male testesterone acting as physiological antagonist. In this study, of nine male patients between 7-23 years of age, angiofibromas were analysed for estrogen and progesterone receptors. Whereas estrogen receptor positivity was found in total six cases, two with exteiXsive and four cases with focal positivity, progesterone receptors were positive ex¬tensively for three cases and focally for three cases.
